MRS. ANNA GRAF, widow of the late David Graf passed away at her home on State Street on her seventieth birthday anniversary Thursday March 20th following a long illness. On November 22, 1929 Mrs. Graf submitted to an operation for the removal of a goiter at St. Elizabeth’s hospital, Appleton from the effects of which she did not recover as rapidly as we expected. On Dec. 11th, she was able to return home but remained under the care of a nurse for a long time. All that could be done for her health and comfort was done by her children. At times it appeared she was gaining in health and hopes were held out for steady improvement but she herself, seemed to have a premonition that her life course was soon to end was resigned and ready to answer the call of The Master.
Mrs. Anna Graf, nee Sircher, daughter of the late Frederick and Dorothea Sircher was born in the old Sircher residence on West Main Street, March 20th, 1860. She had the distinction of being a daughter of one of the first two white settlers of Chilton, which was then called Stantonville after Moses Stanton who operated Chilton’s first mill. Mr. Sircher and his brother-in-law, Mr. J. Lehner came here from Ohio in 1847, the former becoming one of the prominent and most influential citizens of this community.
Main Street, which ran through part of the Sircher farm was named Sircher street after him, being changed to its present name not so many years ago by the city council.
In 1878 she was united in marriage to David Graf and for a time they made their home on the old homestead, assisting Mrs. Graf’s mother in operating the farm, Mr. Sircher having passed away previous to their marriage. Later they bought the Trever farm in Chilton town onto which they moved and which was the family homestead for many years. They sold the homestead to their son, John, and retired from active farming, making their home at Brant.
Mr. Graf passed away on April 28, 1917 and Mrs. Graf then moved to this city, purchasing a home on State Street hoping to enjoy modern comforts of life in her advanced years and affording her children better opportunity to visit with her frequently on trips to this city.
Mrs. Graf is survived by eight children, John of Chilton town, Mrs. Arthur Mortimer, Mrs. Arthur Baldock, Mrs. August Sohrweide, Mrs. Louis Stecker, Mrs. Otto Pingel, Mrs. Emil Schaff, Mrs. Walter Pilling all of Chilton town. She also leaves twenty-five grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. John Piper and Mrs. Minnie Jensen of this city.
Funeral services were held at the Ebenezer Reformed church, Rev. W. A. Arpke officiating.
