August was the oldest and first son of Herman and Elizabeth (Crone) Uphoff. He and Maria Koester were married in Germany in 1885 and soon joined the rest of the family in coming to the United States. His sister Catharina had married her German sweetheart Joseph Schmidt in Minnesota in 1884, and his sister Elizabeth had married Joseph Husmann also in Minnesota in 1886. To prevent their sons from being conscripted into the German Army Herman and Elizabeth decided to bring the whole family together in Minnesota, locating them on a 213 1/3 acre farm in Stearns County (Melrose/New Munich) which they bought from Gerhard and Mary Terhaar in September 1888.

August's brother Johann "George" soon moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. His brothers Henry and Frederick headed to California with Frederick eventually making a home in Oregon.

August bought the farm from his parents in April 1889. He and his wife Maria (Koester) began raising their family on the farm. They had four children, Carl, Joseph, Dora and Bernard. Maria (Koester) died in 1897. August also became a US Citizen on January 14, 1897.

In 1898 August married Maria (Reverman). She was a former sweetheart in Germany. He persuaded her to come to the US and marry him in New Munich in 1898. They had four children, Alois, John, Franz and Agnes.

After the death of August in 1931 Maria (Reverman) sold the farm to her and August's three sons. John and Franz later sold their shares to Alois and he bacame the sole owner. The farm is now owned by Alois's son Charles and his wife Deborah. They are the fourth generation to operate the farm.
