Catharina Uphoff Schmidt

Catharina Uphoff was born November 25, 1864, the first daughter and the third child of Johann Hermann Heinrich Uphoff and Elisabeth Crone Uphoff.

Catherina was the first member of this family to come to the United States. The reason she came to the US was to marry her German sweetheart, Joseph Schmidt, who came to the US ahead of her. They were married on October 30, 1884 in Melrose, Stearns County, Minnesota.

Joseph had a drey line hauling cattle there. At one point they also owned and operated a store in Melrose. Catharina also had a millinery shop making ladies hats.

When she was expecting her first child she asked her sister Elizabeth to come from Germany to be with her. While in Melrose, Joseph introduced Elizabeth to Joseph Husmann and they were soon married. The rest of Catharina's family soon followed from Germany.

Catherina Schmidt died on November 29, 1958 and is buried next to her husband in St. Mary's Cemetery in Melrose, Minnesota.
