John Eckhardt, 70, retired tailor died Monday night in his home at 1403 9th Ave. Scottsbluff, NE after a five year illness. Services will be held Fri. 27 Feb. 1953 at Salem Congregational Church. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. Born 26 Oct. 1882, Frank, Russia, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Eckhardt. He was married April 1907 to Anna Margaret Uhrich at Frank, Russia. She preceded him in death 21 Mar. 1943. At Scottsbluff he married 23 Sept. 1943 Christiana Eskam, who survives. Four daughters survive: Mrs. Bertha Brethauer, Sunnyside, WA; Mrs. Florence Neiman, Minneapolis, MN; Mrs. Freida Krentz and Mrs. Wilma Kulhanek, both of Scottsbluff. Three sons: Walter of Minneapolis, MN; John and Adolph of Scottsbluff. Sister: Mary Kaufman of Scottsbluff; brother Jacob of Greeley; five step children.

John Eckhardt, son of Adam Eckhardt and Anna Maria nee Bauer, was born October 26, 1882, in Frank, Russia, where he also as a child received holy baptism and was confirmed after receiving religious instruction. In 1907 he married Margaret Uhrich who died on March 21, 1943. In the same year he married a second time, namely to Christina Eskam. In 1913 the deceased came with his family to America, where they settled in Scottsbluff. With the exception of five months which the deceased spent in the State of Washington, he lived the entire time in Scottsbluff. Brother Eckhardt was a tailer by profession from which profession he retired several years ago. During the last five years the deceased suffered. His illness worsened in the last weeks and he was called into eternity on Monday, February 23, 1953. He reached the age of 70 years, 3 months and 27 days. Surviving him along with his sorrowful wife are four daughters and three sons: Bertha Bretthauer in Sunnyside, Wash., John, Adolph, Frieda Krentz and Wilma Kulhanek, all four of Scottsbluff, Florence Neiman and Walter in Minneapolis, Minn., as well as five stepchildren: Emma Bolzer in Douglas, Wyo., Theo. Eskam in Minatare, Nebr., Bertha Mendel in Hershey, Nebr., John Eskam in Plattsburg, N.Y., and Riney still at home; 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, one brother, Jacob Eckhardt, in Greeley, Colo., and one sister, Mary Kaufman, in Scottsbluff, Nebr. Brother Eckhardt was converted early in life to his God and Master Jesus Christ and tried to faithfully live up to his teachings. He was also very active in the brotherhood as long as his health allowed. He was not a member very long of our Salem Congregation. The funeral service was delivered on February 27 in Salem Congregational Church and his remains were laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery.
