Cousin Of Elvis Dies In Memphis
Former Gatekeeper At Graceland Was 28

Caroll J. Smith, cousin of Elvis Presley and former gatekeeper at the singer's Graceland home, was found dead in bed at the home of his uncle Travis Smith of 4935 Fairley at 10:30 a.m. yesterday. He was 28.

Cause of death is unknown, but the Sheriff's office said there was no visual sign of foul play. Capt. W. M. Hood has ordered a "routine investigation."

Mr. Smith, who lived in the rear of 736 Craft Road, was born in Tupelo, Miss. He came to Memphis about eight years ago after returning from Korea, where he served in the Army. While no longer gatekeeper at Graceland, he was still employed at the Presley mansion.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lottie Smith; three daughters, Debbie Smith, 2, Carol Smith, 3, and Judy Ann Smith, 5; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Ed Smith of 967 Doris; two brothers Robert Smith of the Doris address and Gene Smith of Memphis, and a sister Mrs. Laverne Pate al 1151 Whitmore.

National Funeral Home has charge.
