L-R: Wilhelm Penner, Helene (Hamm) Penner,
Henry J. Epp, Hedwig (Penner) Epp
They were Mennonites, and members of their church. In 1933 the church services were in German, and Hedwig's inscription is in German. Later, the church services were in English. Henry is listed in church records as Heinrich, and on his tombstone the inscription is in English, and his name has been translated into English as well.

Hedwig H. Penner was born in Nebraska to German parents.
In 1929, she married Heinrich (Henry) J. Epp.
The 1930 US Census shows the young couple farming in Riverside Township, Gage County, Nebraska. They had no children at the time. Henry was 34 and Hedwig 29.
However, the 1940 US Census shows Henry (44) still farming in Riverside Township, Gage County, Nebraska. He was now married to Helen (45), and there were two children, the son and the daughter of Henry (the head of the household, in the US Census, and not his step-children): Harold Epp (9) and Betty (7). Harold would have been born in ~1931, and Betty in ~1933. It is reasonable to assume that they were the son and daughter of Hedwig and Henry, and that Hedwig died when Betty was quite young.
