First wife Anna Retterath, second wife Catherina Freund, third wife Anna Margaretha Biersbach Andreami. The first two wives died in Germany.

HISTORY OF JOHANN FREUND, Sr. from "The Freunds, 1660-1985, Germany to America" by Judy Schmitz:

Johann Freund, Sr., was born on Mar. 26, 1788 in the village of Nitz, Germany where his parents lived. He met and married Anna Retterath on Jan. 30, 1810 at Wanderath. They had two children, Servatius, who grew up to marry Anna Mary Merten and Maria Catharina who married Heinrich Thelen in 1839. Maria Catharina was only married about a year when she died, possibly the result of childbirth or pregnancy. Anna died on Oct. 28, 1814.

On Feb. 23, 1816, Johann married Catherina Freund at Virneburg. The Wanderath records state the wedding took place on Feb. 27, 1816. It was not unusual that two different dates were given because a civil marriage and catholic marriage didn't always take place on the same day. Their seven children were: John Peter, Maria, Anna, Matthias, Eva, Nicolas, and Johann. Eva died at the age of 2 months and on Sept. 26, 1838, Catherine died at Nitz, leaving Johann to raise the large family by himself.

On April 27, 1842, Johann married Anna Margaretha Biersbach -Andreami, the widow of Stephan Andreami of Bruckhausen. No children were born to them that we know of. Anna Margaretha also died before Johann and the surviving children left for America. He endured such hardships with the loss of his three wives and two children, but he never lost his faith and hope for a better life for his family in America.

Johann left Germany in 1846 and landed at the Port of New York in Aug. with his three sons, Matthias age 20, Nicholas age 16, and Johann age 13. They traveled to Sheboygan and walked over the Indian trails to Johnsburg which took them several days. Servatius and John Peter and their families came a year later and joined Johann and the rest of the family until their homes were built. Johann purchased 80 acres of land for $500.00, W-1/2 of SW-1/4 in section 14, Town of Taycheedah, Green Bay land dist. from Nicholas and Anna Catherine Koenigs. On Jan. 3l, 1856, Johann divided his land among his children for $1.00 for each parcel of land which contained between l3 and 20 acres.

•These records are on file at the courthouse in Fond du Lac, WI.

HISTORY OF JOHANN FREUND, Sr. from "The Freunds, 1660-1985, Germany to America" by Judy Schmitz:

Johann Freund , Sr., died on Jan. 12, 1860 at his home. He was laid to rest in the old cemetery at Johnsburg, north of the church. No gravestone was ever found and in those early years wooden crosses were usually erected.

In later years many of the graves in the old cemetery were moved to the new cemetery at Johnsburg but it is not known if Servatius and Johann Sr., our great-great-grandfather were among them.
