HISTORY OF JOHANN FREUND, Sr. from "The Freunds, 1660-1985, Germany to America" by Judy Schmitz:
My great grandfather, Johann Freund worked for farmers after he came to America, clearing land, plowing, making fences and building homes to earn the extra money he needed. While working for the local farmers in the area he met Anna Weber, the daughter of Anton and Anna Katharine Koenigs Weber, who also lived near St. Peter. They were married on Nov. 11, 1857 at Johnsburg. All their children were born on the Freund Homestead farm east of Silica and baptized at Johnsburg.
Before Joe was born, Anna became so ill that she was afraid of losing the baby. Johann walked to Green Bay to get medicine for her from a reputable doctor. She gave birth to Joe, but couldn't take care of him. She died on Feb. 22, 1871 when Joe was only 19 days old. She was laid to rest in St. John's new cemetery at Johnsburg.
Joe was taken to St. Peter to live with Mary and Nick Steffes. Mary and Anna were sisters. During the year Joe lived with them, Mary and Nick became so fond of him that they wanted to keep him. When Mary mentioned that to John, he took Joe home with him and they were never really close again after that.
Around 1906, Nick purchased the farm from Johann. Johann built a small home with a loft close to the big new home so he could have some privacy during the summer months. Johann slept on a small couch and did his own cooking on a little wood stove. Johann only stayed there in the summer because the house was much too cold in the winter time.
As Johann grew older, he lived in the homes of his children. He was only about 5 feet tall, a very quiet and gentle man and never scolded the grandchildren. Shortly before his death he often said that he wanted to go home to Johnsburg again. He died on Dec. 15, 1915 in the Town of Brothertown on the John Ditter farm that grandpa, Joe, rented at that time.
As Joe grew older, he always visited with the Steffes family, even long after he married and had a family of his own. He always called Mary, Mother.
