Rites Held Friday for Peter Spahn, 77
Funeral services were conducted here Friday afternoon at Zion Evangelical U.B. church for Peter Spahn, 77 a retired Culbertson businessman who died Jan. 9 following a long illness. Rev. Merwyn Davidson, pastor of the church, officiated the rites.
"The Holy City", and "The Lord's Prayer" were sung by the soloist, Everett Kern, with accompaniment by Mrs. Carl Herman, organist.
Burial was made in the Culbertson Cemetery, with the Breland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Serving as pall bearers were Wallace Trimpey, E.W. Eisenhart, Harlan Rippen, C.F. Herman, Harry Godtel and Wilbert Wagner.
Mr. Spahn was born in Norka, Russia, Oct. 5, 1884, and died at St. Catherine's hospital in McCook, Neb., on Jan. 9, 1962.
He came to Culbertson, Neb., with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Spahn, when he was eight years old.
A local businessman for more than 50 years, Mr. Spahn retired from the grocery store business about three years ago, due to failing health. When 14 years old, he began working with the railroad section gang, and in 1903 accepted employment in a local store operated by C. Wacker. Mr. Spahn eventually purchased the store from Mr. Wacker and was active in the business until several years ago.
He was an active member of the Zion Evangelical U.B. church and also participated in community affairs, having served on the Culbertson village board and school board. He also was a former treasurer of the Frenchman Valley Irrigation District, a past president of the Culbertson Building & Loan Assn., and a former member of the Hitchcock County Agricultural Society.
One son, Richard, preceeded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Lydia; two sons, Glen of New York City and Gerald of Grand Island, Neb.; four daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Caine of Culbertson, Mrs. Henrietta Rasmussen of Racine, Wis., Mrs. Marcella Barnes of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Bernice Mushlitz of Omaha, Neb.; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Sam Spahn, and two sisters, Mrs. C.O. Claus and Mrs. Frank Kilburn, all of Denver, Colo.
