OBITUARY.

Jonathan Whaley, Esq., an old and much loved citizen of Newbern, departed this life on the 14th instant, of typhoid fever, and was buried from Christ Church (Episcopal) in Cedar Grove Cemetery, a large concourse of his fellow citizens accompanying his remains to their final resting place.

Mr. Whaley was a native of Sampson county, N. C., married a member of the distinguished Toomer family of Fayetteville in 1842, and moved to Newbern in 1852, where he carried on the watch-making business in all of its departments until the breaking out of the war, when, in common with other ardent Southerners, he carried his family and his business to Asheville rather than live under Federal rule then in force in this city.

Returning to Newbern at the close of the hostilities, he commenced again his jewelry business and carried it on successfully until his death.

Mr. Whaley had been a consistent member of the church for 43 years, and highly respected for his unimpeachable integrity, intelligence and unbounded sociality, he will be long missed, not only by his large family of wife, children and grandchildren, but by the community at large in which he dwelt.

His death was unexpected, and while his relatives and friends mourn his loss, they mourn not as those without hope; for his devotion to his church and religion have left them a well grounded assurance that while their loss is great, his gain is great and more glorious; and while he has left a vacuum in an earthly residence in Newbern, he has entered upon an inheritance prepared for him by his spiritual Master in a brighter and more beautiful clime than this -- "where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary soul is forever at rest."

Peace to his ashes.
