Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Loren Vogler officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden. Visitation was on Friday with a prayer service at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Martha M. Popken was born October 28, 1915, in Grant Township, Plymouth County. She was the daughter of Frerick and Maria (Euken) Osterbuhr. She was confirmed on April 13, 1930. She married Elmer J Popken August 30, 1932, in Plymouth County. They farmed near McNally, until moving to a farm near Hawarden, in 1939. They began farming near Hudson in 1961. Mr. Popken died April 13, 1989.
Mrs. Popken was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden since 1939, where she was active in the ladies aide. She enjoyed bowling and earned many trophies.
She is survived by two sons, Bruce and his wife, Pauline, of Elma, and James of Hudson; a daughter, Laraine Thorpe and her husband, Lynn, of Ainsworth, Nebraska; a brother, Elmer Osterbuhr, of Hawarden, a sister, Annie Pefferman, of Akron; a daughter-in-law, Carole Popken of Hawarden; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Popken was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry; and a brother, Otto Osterbuhr.
