George Wagner, a prominent and highly respected citizen of the Culbertson community for more than 50 years, died in the McCook hospital Sunday, February 4, at the age of 72 years, 2 months, and 16 days.

The illness of Mr. Wagner was a short duration. Only the Sunday before he was at his accustomed place in Sunday school and at church services in Zion Evangelical church, of which he was a faithful member.

George Wagner was born November 18, 1867 at Frank, Russia and grew to manhood in that community. It was also at Frank, Russia on February 2, 1888 that he was united in marriage with Miss Mabel Hock. They were married in a double wedding service with Mrs. Wagner's brother, Henry Hock and his bride as the other contracting parties. Two years ago, these two couples, both living in Culbertson, were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversaries together. Their 52nd wedding anniversaries last Friday were marred by the serious illness of Mr. Wagner.

A few months after their marriage in 1888, Mr. and Mrs. George Wagner came to America. They lived at Broomfield, Nebraska for about a year, moving to Culbertson in 1889.

For the first ten years of his residence here, Mr. Wagner was employed by the Burlington railroad. The family then settled on their farm about three miles northeast of Culbertson where they lived for the next 32 years. Nine years ago Mr. and Mrs. Wagner retired from farming, moving to Culbertson.

Mr. Wagner was a hard-working, successful farmer and the father of a large family. Besides the widow, he is survived by five sons, Henry, William, Daniel, Arthur, and Albert and by four daughters, Mrs. Caroline Fassler, Miss Ida Wagner, Mrs. Martha Miller, and Mrs. Marie Koch. All of the sons and daughters except Miss Ida, who lives at Henrietta, Oklahoma, are residents of the Culbertson community. There are also 20 grandchildren.

The funeral was held here Tuesday afternoon at Zion Evangelical church. Services were conducted by Rev. H.A. Norenberg, pastor of that church, assisted by Rev. Adam Ross, who spoke in German. Burial was in the Culbertson cemetery.
