Marie Katherine Eisenach, the daughter of John and Maria Elizabeth Eisenach, was born in Frank, Russia on October 29, 1863. In 1878 when 15 years of age, she came with her parents to America and settled at Sutton, Nebraska where they lived until 1882. From there they moved to Culbertson, Nebraska and purchased a farm northeast of town.

Her marriage to John Wagner on June 7, 1882 took place in a country schoolhouse northeast of Culbertson. Judge Mohr, father of the late William Mohr, performed the ceremony.

John Wagner, a section foreman, had a part in building the first railroad from Indianola through Max, Nebraska. He became the first foreman at Max, where he and his wife then made their home. Children born to them at Max were Marie Katherine in 1883 and Margaret in 1884, both of whom died in infancy. Geoffrey was born in 1885.

In 1886 the family moved to Stratton, Nebraska where Mollie was born in 1887 and John Joseph in 1888. The latter died in 1892.

In the spring of 1889 they moved to a farm northeast of Culbertson where the following children were born: Sarah in 1890 who died March 22, 1936; William Daniel in 1892; Amelia, 1894; Solomon Paul, 1896; Clara, 1898; Rose, 1900; Esther Mae, 1901, and Albert Benjamin, 1906.

In 1891 Mr. and Mrs. Wagner joined Zion Evangelical church of Culbertson, which at that time was under the ministry of Rev. J.G. Schwab. They remained faithful members until their deaths. Mr. Wagner held various church offices in addition to conducting services during the absence of the minister.

Before the turn of the century, in 1899, they moved to a farm southeast of Culbertson where they lived until 1902 when the family moved to Loveland, Colorado. The following year, in 1903, they returned to the Culbertson community, again making their home on the farm southeast of town.

The father of the family died on August 18, 1928 at the home of his daughter, Amelia, who had married Charles Yost, and who at that time were residing in McCook, Nebraska. Although Mr. Wagner died a few months before the dedication of the present church, he had an active part in its construction and contributed $100 for each of his grandchildren.
