Andrew Latka was born in 1890 (1892)? in Ostrow, Galicia, Poland to the parents of Martin Latka and Antonia Skitsko. He had 8 brothers and sisters: Nellie, Victoria, John, Carol,Frank, Mary, Cathrena, and Joseph. On May 15, 1905 the whole family got aboard the "Lake Michigan" ship in Antwerp, Belgium and sailed for Montreal, Canada. They arrived on Canadian soil on May 28, 1905. The family quickly got settled into an area near Smoky Lake, Alberta and started their homesteads here. On May 21, 1921 Andrew Married Hazel Lopushinsky and were blessed with 12 children, plus a "special nephew", Steve Latka, who was the son of the eldest daughter Annie. As Annie was unfit to be a mother at the time, Andrew and Hazel raised Steve as their own child. Brothers and sisters of Annie Latka included: Mary, Victor, Emma, Elmer, Edward, Olga, John, Walter, Michael "Mike", Albert, and George. Andrew had a number of homesteads, including his first near Leashore, Alberta and this is where Annie and Mary were born. In 1927, the family moved to an area near Warspite, Alberta, and the rest of the family were born here. Finally, in 1946 the family made it's final move to a farm near Waskateneau, Alberta. Steve Latka was born here.
