Sherman was born in Iowa in 1865 the son of William Bernhardt & Marrietta Ann (Kaiser) Mertz. He was raised in the Des Moines area of Iowa.The family were farmers.

They moved to Riley County, Kansas & settled in the Manhattan area sometime between 1885 and 1889. Sherman married Mary Belle 'Molly' Theirer on 3 Mar 1889 in Manhattan. They lived in Wabaunsee Township, Wabaunsee County, Kansas where they were farmers and stockmen
They had seven children:

1. Margaret 'Myrtle' A Mertz, 1890-1975
2. Sherman Jacob Mertz, 1893-1930
3. Inez Mary Mertz, 1895-1879
4. Baby Girl Mertz, 1897-1897
5. Harold Mertz, 1899-1960
6. Laurence Eliphant Mertz, 1903-1986
7. Helen Mertz, 1907-2002

Sherman, along with his son Laurence raised Angus and Hereford cattle, pigs, and sheep on their large farm in Wabaunsee County, Kansas. Sherman died in Wamego, Pottawatomie County, Kansas in 1955. He is buried in the Wamego Cemetery.
