Mathias came to America from Germany around 1840 & initially settled in Seneca County, OH. On 19 April 1841, he married Mary Magdelena Simonis in Tiffin, OH; he was age 22, she was 21.

The first seven of the family's children were born in Big Spring (Township) in Seneca County, OH. Around 1857, the family moved to Saint Joseph (Township) in Stearns County, MN to begin their family farm.

On 14 October 1861, Mathias answered the call-to-service to his adopted country. He enlisted in Company "G" of the 4th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment to serve in the American Civil War. Unfortunately, he died at Camp Clear Creek near Corinth, MS at age 43.
