Winifred Palme Myers was born Winifred Palme in Providence, RI on October 23, 1921, the first of three children of Otto Palme and Eleanora (Wallner) Palme. Both of her parents were children of immigrants who had settled in New Bedford, MA. Win grew up living in Rumford, RI with her parents and younger brother, Robert, and sister, Natalie. She graduated from East Providence High School in 1939. She then attended and graduated from Katherine Gibbs.

After graduating, she got a job in 1943 at the New York Academy of Sciences in the Museum of Natural History in New York. While there she relished living in New York, enjoying the museums, theatre, ballet, shops and even attended a Brooklyn Dodgers game. In early 1944 she left New York and returned to Rumford.

The day after returning to Rhode Island, she met her husband to be, Joseph Nash Myers. Win's friend Betty Buffington had asked if she would attend a USO event at the YMCA in Providence. Joe, who was in the Navy at the time training at Melville for PT Boat service, was also at the event. Win, an avid ping pong player, got into a ping pong game with a service man. Joe happened to be playing ping pong at the adjacent table. Legend has it that Joe kept hitting the ball so that it bounced under Win’s table. (Joe’s account claimed Win hit hers under his table.) In any event, they met under one of the tables retrieving a wayward ball, and it was love at first sight. They were engaged a few months later, but soon after Joe was sent off to the war in the Pacific. Shortly after Joe returned at the end of the war, and after four volumes of almost daily correspondence over the 18 months they were apart, they married at East Providence Baptist Church on October 6, 1945 - a very loving marriage that lasted until Joe’s death in 2005.

Together they raised their family and traveled the world sharing a world of experiences. After she and Joe married, they lived in Clifton Heights and North Wales PA (1945-1954) where they had three children, June Myers, Joseph Palme Myers and Robert Nash Myers. They subsequently lived in Dedham MA (1954-1961), Sandy Springs GA (1961-1965), Duxbury MA (1965-2000), and Carlsbad and San Diego CA (2000-2006). A year after her husband Joe’s death, she moved to Colfax, North Carolina to be near her daughter, where she lived the rest of her life.

Win was a fantastic mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Mema, aunt and a dear friend to many. She never met a stranger, and anyone who happened to be sitting next to her for more than a few minutes in a waiting room, air terminal, or anywhere, would have found themselves sharing stories of each other’s lives, an enriching way to pass their time, and often uncovering serendipitous connections to one of her many cousins or acquaintances.

Win did many years of volunteer service for Friends of Cerebral Palsy, and for Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, MA. She also caringly gave her love, time and support to her aging parents and other relatives and neighbors during their time of need.

She was an accomplished pianist, and studied at New England Conservatory during the 1980’s. Her favorite piece to play was Debussy’s Clair de Lune. Win was also a prolific photographer, documenting in pictures every aspect of every family event. She was also an accomplished and prolific conversationalist.
