A memorial service for Mr. William H. Wooden, 79, of 1702 Indiana Ave., LaPorte, will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Penelope Brown officiating. He died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at 11:10 a.m. at his home.

Friends may call Saturday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service. LaPorte Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic service in conjunction with the memorial service. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church of LaPorte General Fund.

He was born May 30, 1922, in Morgan County, Ind., to Joshua H. and Roxie (Rothrock) Wooden, and had lived most of his life in the LaPorte area.

Mr. Wooden was retired in 1984 after 40 years as a teacher in the LaPorte Community Schools. He was a member of First Christian Church and a graduate of Purdue University with bachelor's and master's degrees. He was past worshipful master of F&AM Lodge 41, past chapter president of the AARP state legislative committee, past vice president of LaPorte Federation of Teachers, past president of LaPorte Teachers Association; past vice president of LaPorte County Historical Society, past secretary of Area 2 Agency on Aging, past vice president of LaPorte Tree Commission; past High Priest of Royal Arch Mason Chapter 15, past illustrious master of Council 32 Criptic Mason; past Imminent Commander of Knight Templer Commanderee 12, past vice president of LaPorte County Retired Teachers, past secretary of Central Labor Council, past president of LaPorte Camera and Travel Club, and a member of Iota Lambda Sigma, Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Delta Pi, and Sigma Delta Psi. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On April 21, 1943, in Martinsville, Ind., he married Ruth H. Goss, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kathleen E. of Noblesville, Ind., and Rebecca R. of LaPorte; four sons, Robert L. and John H. both of LaPorte, William H. of Silver Springs, Md., and Michael J. of Hammond; eight grandchildren; and one brother, John Robert of Encino, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary A.; two sisters and two brothers.
