David Laurie
October 31, 1938 - October 26, 2014

David Douglas Laurie, beloved husband, father, and friend, received his heavenly reward on October 26, 2014 at the age of 75.

Services will be held at the Booker High School Auditorium on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 10:30 AM with Pastor Derrel Evins officiating. Interment will be at the Heart Cemetery in Booker, Texas under the direction of Good Samaritan Funeral Service Booker, Texas.

David was born on October 31, 1938 in Canadian, Texas. He was the seventh of nine children born to Emma and James Laurie. He was raised on a farm and ranch fourteen miles south of Darrouzett, Texas and graduated from Darrouzett High School. David married the love of his life, Norma Custer, on January 3, 1958. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree. David and Norma settled in Booker, Texas and celebrated the births of their three children: Lance, Brent, and Janet. In later years, they welcomed five granddaughters, who called him "Dandy." David loved his family more than anything and attributed his successes to their support.

His lifelong career as an educator began in Mobeetie in 1961 and Spearman in 1963. He accepted the Agricultural Science Instructor position at Booker High School in 1964 and taught there for the next 35 years. During his time teaching vocational agriculture and acting as the FFA Advisor, he had 28 American Farmer Degree Recipients, 220 Lone Star Degree Winners, and numerous competitive FFA leadership teams at the district, area, and state levels. He had an outstanding FFA program that received national-level recognition. He was the recipient of many honors and awards, including an Honorary American Farmer Degree in 1979 and he was the Texas Agri-Science Teacher of the Year in 1997. David served on multiple committees through the Texas FFA, including the State American Degree Committee from 1985-1998. In 2004, the Vocational Building at Booker High School was named in his honor. His career impacted the lives of hundreds of students, many of whom attribute the people they are today to David's influence.

In addition to teaching, David was a farmer and rancher throughout his life and specialized in raising Registered Black Angus Cattle. He was faithful in his daily care of the land and the animals, especially his treasured Border Collies. David was also actively involved in the Booker community. He was on the Booker Equity Board of Directors for ten years. He served on the Lipscomb County Junior Livestock Show Board of Directors for thirty-five years and was instrumental in building the rodeo arena. He was the voice of the Booker Kiowa football team for thirty-three years. He also served as Lay Leader for the Booker United Methodist Church and presented the weekly children's sermon for fourteen years.

David was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Milton Laurie, Donald Laurie, Shirley Beal, and R.T Laurie.

David is survived by Norma, his wife of 56 years, and their children: Tina and Lance Laurie and daughter Kinsey of Booker, Texas; Susan and Brent Laurie and daughters Kirsten and Jenna of Flower Mound, Texas; and Janet and Nicholas Weatherston and children Mallory Weatherston and Landry and Taylor Yarborough of San Antonio, Texas.
