Cheri Laurie Steed, 78, passed away March 10, 2015, at the Sherman Hospice House on the Mayo Campus in Scottsdale, Arizona. A memorial in Bakersfield will be held in the future. Memorial rites will be held on Keahole Point, near Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Cheri was born February 22, 1937, in Canadian, Texas to James and Emma Laurie. She spent the first 18 years of her life on the Laurie Ranch, near Darrouzett. Cheri received her B.A. in 1959 from Texas Technological College in Lubbock. She was an active member of Gamma Phi Beta and Sock and Buskin, president. Cheri received her Master’s Degree in 1969 from West Texas State University in Canyon. Cheri loved her job as a teacher and taught for 37 years in Texas and California. She retired in 1997 and spent that time visiting family, traveling overseas, volunteering and playing bridge with her friends. Cheri is survived by her daughter, Valerie Schmalhorst and husband Stephen of Louisiana, and her son, Maurice Woods of Perryton, Texas, her grandchildren Natalie and Brian Schmalhorst and Clint Woods and one great grandson Slayton Woods. She is also survived by her brother Jimmie Laurie and two sisters Kathryn Paul and Karen Minyen all from Texas. Cheri requested memorials to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. (www.cff.org)
