Infantile paralysis claimed its first victim in Utica this year when Carol Welch, 12, youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin B. Welch, died in the contagion pavilion of the General Hospital October 31, 1941.

Carol Welch was stricken with paralysis of the throat Sunday. Her condition became worse Thursday and she was placed in the iron lung or mechanical respirator.

She was born in Utica June 23, 1929 and was in the eighth grade at the Utica Country Day School. Three Utica children who went to a theater with her Saturday have been quarantined in their homes.

She was a member of St. John's Church. Surviving besides her parents are a brother, Robert, and a sister, Joan.
