ABBOTTSTOWN Laverne R. Emig, 75, died Wednesday, December 24, 2014, at his home. He was the companion of Nancy L. Emig.
Laverne was born March 7, 1939, in Abbottstown, the son of the late Robert George Washington and Mabel Marie (Hoke) Emig.
Laverne was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Abbottstown, and a graduate of the East Berlin High School, class of 1957. Laverne was a past member of the Abbottstown Fire Co., past member of the York County Garageman's Assoc., a member of the former "Flaming Knights", and the owner and operator of Emig's Exxon and Auto Sales for over 45 years. Laverne enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and was a member of the "Flying Dutchman Hunting Camp" in Potter County.
In addition to his companion, Nancy, Laverne is survived by two sons, Craig R. Emig and his wife, Tonia of East Berlin, and Chris A. Emig and his companion, Beverly Stambaugh of Hanover; a step grandson, Todd R. Sell and his companion, Erika Currey of Hanover; a step great-granddaughter, Avery C. Sell of Hanover; two brothers, Clair Emig of Spring Grove and Kenneth Emig of Abbottstown; four sisters, Lena Breighner of Abbottstown, Erma Becker and her husband, Edward of Hanover, Doris Lease and her husband, Niles of East Berlin, and Carolyn Holsopple of East Berlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Anna Sanders and Geraldine Roomsburg; and a brother, Harold "Sparky" Emig. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Monday, December 29, 2014, at 12 p.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church, 100 E. Water St., Abbottstown, with the Rev. Shawn Berkebile officiating.
Burial will be in the St. John's Church cemetery. There will be no viewing. A visitation will be held on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Emig, Randy Becker, Gary Breighner, Kerry Lease, Steve Holsopple, Jeffrey Emig, and Steve Sauter.
In addition to flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to VNA Hospice of Hanover/Spring Grove, 440 N. Madison St., Hanover, PA 17331; or the ACS, American Cancer Society of York/Adams Co., 924-N Colonial Ave., York, PA 17403. The Feiser Funeral Home, Inc. of East Berlin is in charge of the arrangements.
