Baldwin Antone Keller was born on Thursday, March 18, 1915, to Peter and Katherine (Wolf) Keller. He was the third born of twelve children. He was four years old when his family moved from Hague, ND, to the Glencross-Trail City area crossing the Missouri river by ferry boat, animals and all.
Baldwin began playing music around 1930 beginning with the violin and later the saxophone and continued playing for the extent of his life. His family got through the hard times of the 1930’s by forming a family band and playing for various functions throughout the area.
He was married on October 19, 1936, to Johanna Senger in the middle of the Great Depression. They moved to Michigan, ND, where they lived and worked for Johanna’s uncle making $.25 per hour. In 1939 they moved back to the Trail City area with their two children, Margie and Dick. They made their home northwest of Trail City where they raised a family of eight children. He was very proud of his family and they all worked alongside each other on the family farm. Baldwin was always quoted as saying “These were the best days of my life”. Baldwin and Johanna retired from farming in August 1974 and made their home in Mobridge, SD. Here Baldwin was able to continue his love of music by playing with his longtime friend, Matt Schweitzer, where they played as a regular every year at the Days of 1910 celebration in Timber Lake, SD. He loved nothing more than “sitting” in with anyone who could play a tune. He was inducted into the SD music hall of fame in 1999. What an honor for someone who never read a note of music!
He was a member of the St. Josephs’ Catholic Church of Mobridge, South Dakota. He enjoyed a long life well lived with devout faith in God and love of family.
He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family including his brother, Peter (Fauneil) Keller of Trail City; sister-in-laws, Delila Keller, Kathleen Keller and Etta Keller; his eight children, Margie (John) Tillman of Gurley, AL, Dick (Donna) Keller of Mobridge, SD, Harvey (Diane) Keller of Plymouth, MN, Jane Keller of Rapid City, SD, James (Jackie) Keller of Trail City, SD, Karen Miller of Jamestown, ND, Kenny Keller of Stirum, ND, and Elizabeth (John) Hughes of Belle Fourche, SD; 21 grandchildren, Charlene (Jim) Lepinski, Mike Reinbold, Mary (Stuart) Werner, Anne (Phil) Aarness, Rick (Wanda) Verbeck, Heidi (Scott) Hamilton, Jackie (Eric Scholl) Keller-Honn, Janell (Mike) Rath, Jason (Jackie) Keller, Jaime (Russell) Wiese, Julie Corbin Baker, Alison (Brian) Offner, Aaron Miller, Amy Miller, Abby Miller, Nicole (Will) Adkins, Kenton Keller, Kelsey Keller, Leigh Ann (Tommy) Ojeda, Jeff (Jen) Hughes, and Lynette (Trinity) Jaskela; and 34 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and four sisters.
