Cecil A. Axthelm, 90, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at his home in North Platte.


Cecil was born Oct. 16, 1915, at Martel to Elmer August and Grace Irene Graham Axthelm. As a small boy his family lived south of Sutherland and during his school years his family lived in Gothenburg where he graduated from high school in 1933. Cecil joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in July 1942, and was a glider pilot in the South Pacific. He was discharged in February 1946.

Cecil married Doris Ellen Anderson on July 19, 1944, in Gothenburg. They made their home in North Platte where he worked for W.J. O'Connor's Dime Store for 23 years and also served as manager. In 1965, they purchased the Cedar Lodge and owned that for 27 years. In 1993, they sold the Cedar Lodge and semi-retired.

Mr. Axthelm was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Platte Valley Lodge 32 AF&AM, P.R. Halligan Post 163 American Legion, Woodmen of the World and the National Glider Pilots Association.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Axthelm of North Platte; a daughter, Kylie (David) Young of Jefferson City, Mo.; three sons, Michael Axthelm of Hillsboro, Ore., Timothy (Mary) Axthelm of North Platte and Mark (Stephanie) Axthelm of Gothenburg; two sisters, Ethel VanWey of Goth-enburg and Mildred Umshler of Cozad; three brothers, his twin Clayton (Marjorie) Axthelm, Norris (Mary) Axthelm, all of Riverton, and Glen (Colleen) Axthelm of North Platte; nine grandchildren, Isaac and Aaron Axthelm, Jason (Sharon) Axthelm, Bradley (Sarah) Axthelm, Jamie (JoEllen) Axthelm, Jenny (Steve) Skupa, Ian and Carson Young, and the late Donnie Farr; and grandson-in-law, Fred Farr; 10 great-grandchildren, Shane, Christopher and Roger Farr, Case and Kate Axthelm, Alexa and Ander Axthelm, Mackinze, Sydney and Abbie Skupa; and many nieces, nephews and other family.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Axthelm; and a brother, Kenneth Axthelm.

A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church.

Family committal service and interment will be Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at the Peckham Cemetery south of Gothenburg.

A public memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in North Platte with the Rev. Dr. Charles Spence officiating.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore.
