Lillian P. Carpenter of Birdsall died Friday, May 13, 2016 in the Absolut at Houghton nursing home. She was born on July 31, 1923 in the Town of Allen, a daughter of the late Leon and Florence VanGuilder James. She married Gerald C. Carpenter, who predeceased her on September 19, 2004.

She was a former member of the Canaseraga Women’s American Legion Auxiliary, the Birdsall Volunteer Fire Company and was formerly the Birdsall Town Clerk.

Surviving are her children, David (Nancy) Carpenter of Fillmore, Rodney (Lisa) Carpenter of Birdsall, Daniel (Theresa) Carpenter of Canaseraga, Carol Carpenter of Wellsville, 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two sisters, Marleah Ritter and Evelyn Hale, a sister-in-law, Roberta "Bertie" James and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Carl Carpenter, six brothers, Francis "Dutch" James, Merlin "Tony" James, Hollis "Bill" James, Alvin "Mike" James, Kenneth James, Justin Earl "Jess" James and a special nephew, Roger James.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 11:00 am in Short Tract Cemetery. Bill Lawson, Pastor of the Fillmore Wesleyan Church will officiate.

Memorials if desired to: Birdsall Volunteer Fire Company.
