Anna was the daughter of prominent Terre Haute saloonkeeper Gustave Nicolai and his wife Martha (Rossbacher) Nicolai. Anna's first marriage was in 1897 to Alfred Kulow, an agent of the Schlitz Brewing Company. They had three children: Franz/Frank Alfred, Albert Paul, and Elsa Emilie Martha. Alfred Kulow died in 1902; Elsa's birth certificate states that Alfred died of an asthma attack an hour and a half before Elsa was born.

Her second marriage in 1906 was to bartender Florian Francis "Frank" Fischer. They had three daughters: Florine, Josephine, and Margaret.

Anna died from lymphosarcoma of the kidney in 1952. She is buried along with her daughters in Roselawn Memorial Park, while Florian is buried in the Fischer family mausoleum at Anderson Memorial Park, Madison County, Indiana.
