Margaret was the youngest of the six children of Anna Nicolai Kulow Fischer (Anna had three children with her first husband and three with her second). She grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana, and as a young woman she worked as an office clerk. She married William Allard in 1947; it was William's second marriage. The couple did not have any children together. They had moved to Florida by the time of William's death in 1981. Margaret lived another 29 years and passed away at the age of 95. She was buried in Terre Haute with her mother and sisters.
