Published - New Prague Times Newspaper, New Prague, MN - October 10, 1935, p.1, col.7 Mrs. John Svoboda Died October 3 At The Age of Seventy ---- Resided in Helena, Cedar Lake, Veseli, Hopkins And Lonsdale ---
Mrs. John Svoboda, a resident of this section of the state nearly seventy years, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul on Thursday, October 3, of lingering illness and the infirmities attending old age. Death occurred at 8:45 o’clock, in the presence of loved ones.
She had been in failing health the past two years, and was resigned and ready to meet her maker.
Born in Veseli, Bohemia in 1865, she came with her parents to American at the tender age of four years. The family settled first in Helena Township, and later, in the year 1872, moved to Cedar Lake township. In 1880, they moved to Veseli, and she was married there in 1885 to John Svoboda. In 1907, they moved to Hopkins and later came to Lonsdale where they continued to reside.
She was a woman of gentleness and wisdom and possessed of the rugged qualities of perseverance and patience, characteristic of pioneer settlers. Her long career of loyal and devoted service to her family, and her cordial neighborliness endeared her to everyone.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1933, his demise occurring at Lonsdale.
She leaves six children. They are Joseph, of Billings, Montana; John and Emil of Faribault; Charles, in California; Jerry of Mandan, North Dakota; Mary of St. Peter; and Ludwig of New Prague. Two sons, Albert and Edward are deceased. Sisters and brothers of deceased are Rev. Albert Ziskovsky of the Lonsdale parish, Frank, John and Joseph also of Lonsdale; and Mrs. Anna Douda Sr. and Mrs. John Malecha of Redwood Falls.
Rev. Albert J. Ziskovsky, rector of the Immaculate Conception church of Lonsdale, was celebrant of the requiem mass at the service held in that church on October 7 at ten o’clock a.m. He was assisted by Rev. C. J. Portell of Veseli as deacon, and by Rev. George Ziskovsky, a nephew of deceased, of the St. Paul Seminary. Pallbearers were Joseph Cervenka, Frank Svoboda, William Svoboda, James Douda, George Machacek and Emil Ziskovsky. Interment occurred in the Holy Trinity cemetery at Veseli.
Among those who paid their last tribute in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Malecha, Mr. and Mrs. William Vierling of Redwood Falls; Joseph Svoboda, Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Schambour, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Dvorak and son James, Mr. and Mrs. Lumir Krocak.
