Louis J. Svoboda, 91, of New Prague, died at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague, on Friday evening, May 24. He was a retired St. Patrick area farmer.
A native of Wheatland Township, Rice County, Louis Svoboda was born on Feb. 13, 1905. He was a son of John and Katherine (Ziskovsky) Svoboda. His father was a native of Czechoslovakia. He attended a rural school.
Louis Svoboda and Anna Rose Dvorak were married at St. Wenceslaus Church in New Prague, on Oct. 18, 1927, and they operated their farm on the east shore of Cedar Lake for many years. They also operated the Svoboda Picnic Grounds at Cedar Lake for 20 years.
Louis (Louie) Svoboda was a member of the New Prague Sportsmen's Club. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and was known for his wit and sense of humor.
Louis Svoboda is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Tom Duban, Faribault, and Anna and Myron Eischens, New Prague; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Barta, Spicer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Anna Svoboda, who died on May 2, 1995; a daughter, Mary Ann, who died in infancy; and seven brothers, John F., Jerry, Joseph, Charles, Edward, Albert and Emil J. Svoboda.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague. The Rev. Gilbert DeSutter of Cedar Lake, offered the Mass of Christian Burial.
Serving as pallbearers were Leonard, Wallace, Dennis, Charles and Edward Duban, grandsons, and Ronald and William Peterka, Jr., godchildren.
Interment was at St. John Cemetery, Veseli.
Visitation was at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague, on Monday from 4 until 9 p.m.
