After receiving his medical degree from the Universities of Munich and Wurzburg, Jacob decided to try his fortunes in California, where the Gold Rush was then in full swing.

He arrived in San Francisco in 1850 and immediately began his practice there, quickly establishing his reputation not only as a physician, but also as a civic leader.

Enumerated as 'James' Regensburger on the 1852 California state census, he is listed as a bachelor and a physician, residing in the household of his brother's family, merchant Henry*** and Babette Regensburger. (He later appears in the 1880 census with his own family enumerated as 'John' rather than Jacob.)

In 1853 he married Munich-born Catharine 'Kate' Neuhaus, to whom he was betrothed before leaving Germany. They were the parents of six known children:

Dr. Martin Regensburger, Physician
Ernest Otto Regensburger, Merchant
Thekla (Oscar) Helmrich
Alice (Edward) Gelderman
Miss Emma Regensburger
Dr. Arthur T. Regensburger, Dentist

Jacob was an early member of San Francisco's German Hospital, opened 07 Jan 1858 and built by the German General Benevolent Society of that city. He was physician and surgeon there for thirty-six years, serving twenty-five years in an active role and the last eleven as a consultant.

He was also a member of the County Medical Society, the Society of German Physicians, a founder and past president of the the San Francisco Verein Association, and many other institutions.

A member of the Odd Fellows, he was initially interred in their cemetery. When the city of San Francisco closed that cemetery and ordered the removal of all its burials, Dr. Regenesburger's remains were relocated to this cemetery.

Jacob died at his residence, 1432 Geary Street, after a short illness. He was survived by his wife and all six children.

***In 1887, Dr. Regensburger offered his home for the funeral services of his brother Henry's son, attorney David H. Regensburger.)
