Alice Cornelia Thaw was born on January 2, 1880, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to William Thaw, Sr. and his second wife Mary Sibbet Copley.
On April 27, 1903 Alice become the Countess of Yarmouth when she married George Francis Alexander Seymour, the son of Hugh de Grey Seymour, 6th Marquess of Hertford and Hon. Mary Hood in Pittsburgh. The marriage was annulled in 1908.
On March 22, 1913 she married Boston banker Geoffrey Whitney on the estate of her sister Margaret (Thaw) Carnegie in Georgia.
Milton architect George F. Shepard was hired to design "Winter Valley", on Highland Street in Milton for the couple in 1921.
The Whitneys and their two sons spent summers in their home named Little Harbor Farm which overlooks Woods Hole.
