Son of William Thaw and Mary Sibbett Copley.

William was the owner of the Red Star and American Steamship Lines, and the VP of the Pennsylvania RR Company Lines West, of Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Thaw and Eliza Thomas of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA.

Mary Sibbett Copley was the daughter of Josiah Copley and Margaret Welden of Armstrong Count, PA.
