Thusnelda “Nellie” Shubert was born 19 August 1903 at Inver Grove, Minnesota to Bernard and Lydia (Laepple) Shubert, natives of Germany. Her father was serving as a Methodist minister in a German-speaking church at the time of her birth. During the next five years the family would move three times as the church transferred Rev. Shubert to Johnsonville, Minnesota, then to Lawrence and Sylvia, Kansas.
In 1909 the Shuberts immigrated to Canada, where they took up a homestead near Expanse, Saskatchewan. They returned to the United States in 1918, living on a tobacco farm near Acme, North Carolina for a year before settling in Franklin, Delaware County, New York.
Nellie worked briefly for General Electric in Schenectady before marrying Frank B. Allen in 1923. They later moved to Sidney, New York where Frank was a machinist for the Bendix Corporation. They had two sons, Paul and Theodore.
Nellie died 12 August 1992 in Unadilla, New York and is buried in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
