One of five children of Walter and Mathilda (Hansen) Brandt, Wallace received his DVM degree from the University of Illinois. He married Bernette C. Johnson in Park Ridge, IL on June 12, 1954. Surviving are his wife and 5 children: Bernette Lynn, Randall Wallace, Carol Beth, Cristen Sue, and Rebecca Kay; a brother, Virgil, and sister, Phyllis. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Delmar and Vernon Dale.

Wallace had a veterinary practice in Flanagan, IL until 1975, when he moved to New Jersey to work for Hoffman-LaRoche in charge of field trials. After retirement in 1991, he and his wife moved to Durango, Colorado.

While in Flanagan, he served as mayor, chairman of the board for the Good Samaritan Home, and president of the Lions Club. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Flanagan, Jacksonville Chapel in New Jersey, and 1st Baptist Church in Durango, Colorado.
