In the fall of 1918, Walter and Tillie moved to Anchor, Illinois where they leased Walter's father's farm and began farming there. They had six children, four of whom survived to adulthood: Delmar, Virgil, Phyllis and Wallace.
Tillie received a special community service award in 1937 for founding the Anchor 4-H Club, teaching Sunday school, and working as director and past chairman of the Home Bureau Unit. She moved to Champaign in 1952 with her son, Wallace, who was attending veterinary school there at the time. In 1954, Tillie moved to Denver, Colorado to live with her daughter Phyllis and her husband Bill, for several years. She then moved to Soquel, California to live near Delmar and his family, and later moved to nearby Aptos, where she lived until her death.
