Mrs. Margaret Burkhalter, former local resident and widow of James Burkhalter, died yesterday at her home in Kingman, Kan. Mrs. Burkhalter was a housekeeper for 10 years for James Keys here, and left a year ago to live with a son, Eli, in Kingman. The body was to be brought to the Aughe and Son funeral home, where funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock; interment in Fair Haven cemetery.

Mrs. James Burkhalter, who died in Kingman, Kansas, was buried in Fair Haven cemetery today. She had lived the greater part of her life in Frankfort, and for several years was housekeeper for James Keys.

Now the younger generation know nothing of James Keys, but to the older people there was no better known man in Clinton county. Some sixty years or longer ago Dave Allen and his brother Ed operated a big grocery business on the west side of the square in Frankfort. They did a tremendous business and Jim Keys was their chief clerk. As a side line for himself he bought great quantities of raw furs. In the latter years of his life he owned a small poultry and butter market on West Washington street, and 'twas then that Mrs. Burkhalter was his housekeeper.

Mrs. Burkhalter was born in Lehigh county, Pennsylvania, and was a daughter of Enoch and Kitty Reppert Roth. She was married to James Burkhalter in 1881.

Many years ago the Enoch Roth family lived in a log house on the site of the Will Rex home, northeast of Mulberry. One of the sons, Henry, married Lizzie Doty, a granddaughter of Uncle Jonas Clark. Another son was Sam Roth, the deceased Edna Mills merchant, and Ed Roth, of Owasco, was also a son.
