RICHARD "PA" SCHNITTJER

It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Richard Schnittjer on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Dr. Gendreau Personal Care Home at the age of 81 years. Richard was born on November 22, 1929 in Parkersburg, Iowa, son of Dirk and Anna Schnittjer (nee Groothoff). He was a twin, who predeceased him at birth. Richard spent the early years of his life in Iowa, helping his dad as a painter. On November 16, 1954 at Ochre River, Richard married Greta Schroeder (Boerchers). He became an instant stepfather to Jerry Schroeder, a son from Greta's marriage to Bruno Schroeder who predeceased her. They farmed together in the Ste Rose area. In 1957, Greta gave birth to a son, Donald. In 1961, they purchased a farm in the Carrick district, south of Makinak. They continued to farm together, raising cattle, milking cows, and growing grain until 1992. In the spring of that year, they retired and returned back to Ste. Rose du Lac. Richard was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease and had trouble with his mobility. After Greta died in 2005, he stayed in his own home with home care support. However, this became too much for him, and he moved to Happy Haven in Dauphin to be closer to Don and his family. At this time, he had his own private chauffeur, John, who took him for rides in his Lincoln. However, home care support was not enough and in the winter of 2006, he moved to the Dr. Gendreau Personal Care Home. Parkinson Disease took a toll on "Pa", and he was confined to a wheelchair and found it difficult to speak. Richard was first and foremost a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Pa spoke a lot about his grandchildren and great grandchild, Brittany and Stephanie and Sienna. He had their photos posted in his room and always asked how they were doing. He loved to own a new car, and always kept them clean and well-polished, and was known to race to church on Sunday mornings. He would make any excuse to go for a car ride to view and explore the countryside. He was always physically active, either going for daily walks or riding his bicycle and helped Greta tend to her vegetable garden. He enjoyed travelling, and made numerous trips with Greta to Iowa, California and Ontario, as well as several bus tours throughout the United States. Pa and Greta were also able to take a trip to Germany in 1991. Richard was predeceased by his twin brother at birth, his father and mother, his sister Ruth Schnittjer, and his wife, Greta. Left to mourn and cherish many fond memories are his two sons, Jerry Schroeder and wife Marnie of Caledonia, ON; Donald Schnittjer and wife Carol of Dauphin, MB; and granddaughters Stephanie and Brittany; and great granddaughter Sienna. He is survived by sisters and brothers who reside in Iowa, Esther (Wayne) Keller, Edward (Helen) Schnittjer, Harold (Barbara) Schnittjer, Herbert Schnittjer, Eunice (Merle) Van Gerpen and Loraine (Jerry) Sheffield. A private memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. Gendreau Personal Care Home. Dobchuk Funeral Home of McCreary has care of the arrangements.
