Alfred Mertz was born in Sept. or Oct. 1859 in Center, Henry County, Iowa, the first child & son of William Bernhardt (Bernard) & Marietta Ann 'Kaiser' Mertz. His mother died in 1871 while Alfred was just 12 years old. By the time he was 25 years of age he was no longer living at home with his father.

Alfred was living in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1892 when he married Malinda Wheatley. She was a Dressmaker. Alfred was a Travel Agent. By 1910 he was working at the DuRoad Theatre and later he became Proprietor of an Amusement Company.

Alfred died about 1926. He is no longer mentioned in any records in Indianapolis but his wife Malinda is in the 1930 Census. Her Will states Alfred is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Indianopolis, Marion County, Indiana. She was buried beside him after her death in 1936.
