Bertha was born in a tobacco farm field in New Haven CT ; it is unclear why she is the only child of Karrol and Veronika born there ; she never had a birth certificate but did have a small card provided by her parents / New Haven that she was born there. It is possible her mother was visiting family (as her maiden name relatives are reported as living in the area on census records) and birth was premature. None the less, shortly thereafter she was in Elizabeth NJ with the rest of her family. After her parents died at ages 54 and 55, she stayed at the home at 448 First Avenue in Elizabeth with her other siblings and raised her family there. Bertha and John had two children John Carl Zyla and Lorraine Veronica Zyla - both who died of cardiac arrest at a young age in their 40;s.
John Zyla (father) told us the story of how on their wedding date, he had rented out the Polish Falcons for the reception but there was a problem and at the last minute, it was held at the corner tavern several doors down from the home. Bertha was a great cook and seamstress. She had an old Singer sewing machine that was electrified and would sit in the attic and sew. Her grandson has it now. At Easter time, she shred real horseradish and make all the traditional Polish Easter foods. They attended St. Adalbert RC Church in Elizabeth.
