Helen Kalley was the second child born to Michael (Morris) Kalley and Mary (Gyure) Kalley in September of 1903 in New York. The family may have been living in New Brunswick, New Jersey, at that time, as they were in 1905 (New Jersey state census) and 1910 (U.S. Census). The family, including older brother Nandor (aka Nathan, aka Norman, b. 1902) and younger sister Julia (aka Jewell, b. 1904) moved to Detroit, Michigan between 1910 and 1920. Tragically, young Helen, age 17, drowned in a boating accident on the St. Clair River near St. Clair Flats, Michigan, in August of 1920, while on holiday with friends of the family and her sister Julia, who very nearly drowned as well.
