Konrad was born in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany 18 Nov. 1829. He came to the United States in 1854 and landed in New York. He had been in Louisville seven years when he was naturalized on 25 June 1861, age 31, (Bk 34, Page 138). The name on the naturalization is Conrad. The name on the tombstone is Konrad the German spelling.

Konrad married Mary (Maria) Steinmetz on 13 March 1832. They bought 16.65 acres in Spring Garden near Flat Lick Pike on 21 Aug. 1865. The property joined Mary's sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Edward Wirth.

Konrad died 8 Feb. 1891 and is buried in the Eastern Cemetery. The estate was settled in 1917 after the death of Mary on 4 June 1915. Daughter Carrie received the farm house and an adjoining 2.5 acres. Daughter Maggie was given the right to live in the house and was willed all the furniture in the two front rooms upstairs.

The death of Konrad was reported in the newspaper on 9 Feb. 1891: Conrad Bickel, a brother of Jacob Bickel, the ex-Councilman and present Superintendent of the City Workhouse, dropped dead yesterday morning while sitting on the porch of his home on the Preston Street Road. At the time of death Mr. Bickel was sitting with his brothers-in-law, David Woerach and Henry Krill. His head was seen to fall on his breast as if nodding. He had said only a few minutes before that he was felling unusually well, and they thought him sleeping. They started in the house when one of them went back to say something to Mr. Bickel. Receiving no answer, Mr. Krill shook him by the shoulder to awake him and then learned that he was dead. The deceased was sixty-two years of age and spent most of his life on a farm. He leaves a wife and several children. He was very corpulent and his death was the result of a stroke of apoplexy. The remains will be interred Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in the Eastern Cemetery. The funeral services will be held in the German Evangelical Lutheran church, of which deceased was a member.

Children of Konrad and Mary are posted behind the tombstone for Mary. The memorials for Konrad and Mary were established by another party and have not responded to a request for transfer of management of the memorials or to link Konrad to Mary Anna.
