John Landis Horst, 91, of Hagerstown, MD, peacefully completed his journey home on Friday, November 15, 2019. Born near Williamsport, MD, on March 29, 1928. He was one of 15 children of the late Henry Strite and Grace Mae (Eshleman) Horst.
For 27 years John worked at Statton Furniture Co. of Hagerstown, MD. He used his talents as a carpenter for building furniture for family and friends, remodeled homes, and much cabinetry work. He retired in 1990 from Mack Trucks after 12 years of service as a Machine Repairman.
He had a passion for restoring antique and classic cars and was the oldest member of the Mason-Dixon Antique Car Club.
John is survived by his three daughters, Linda C. Beall and husband, Gary L. of Hagerstown, Mary Susan Hendershot and husband, Larry K. of Hagerstown, and Deborah K. Reichard and husband, Steven R. of Hagerstown; sister, Edna Mae Naylor of Smithsburg, MD; two brothers, Joseph Allen Horst of Hampstead, MD, and Charles Ray Horst of Tacoma, GA; five grandchildren, Stephen S. Gentry, David A. Gentry, Kendra S. Moore, Keri A. Hendershot-Waymire, and Brian S. Hollinger; three step grandchildren, Megen Beall, Andrew Reichard, Anna Haupt; nine great grandchildren, Alexis, Sydney, Hailey, Chance, Malea, Kayla, Kiersten, Kaitlyn, and Kameron; 14 step great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and 10 step great-great grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Doris E. (Baker) Horst; grandson, Keith D. Hollinger; five brothers, Daniel Perry, Abram, Adin, Paul and George; six sisters, Mary Margaret, Anna, Ida, Cora, Mildred and Dorothy.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, November 22, 2019 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 24 E. Baltimore St., Funkstown, MD. Rev. Lee Brumback will officiate.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
