Baruch Hirsch Goldschmied, son of Abraham and Esther Goldschmied, born 29 Dec. 1918 in Podgorze (Krakow).

Baruch was a 'druggist', worked in a pharmacy, in Krakow. (In Australia he worked in sales).

Baruch married Manya Mindlegrun on 4th August 1940, in Krakow. On the ghetto lists, they were not yet living together - or perhaps the sudden emergency of the Holocaust / deportation to the Krakow ghetto meant that they remained with their birth families, as shown on the Deportation list to the ghetto.

In January 1941, Manya was sent to work at Plaszow concentration camp (prior to it being in operation).

At some time, Baruch lost both his parents, killed in the Holocaust, either in the Krakow ghetto, Plaszow concentration camp or elsewhere (no records are available after the family were shown on the Deportation list from Krakow to the Krakow ghetto, April 1941).

Baruch Hirsch was deported to Auschwitz in 1942, and a sub-camp, Kattowitz.

From there, on 29th January, 1945, he was deported to Mauthausen concentration camp, in Austria. It was built to work inmates to death and conditions were particularly horrific. On his (Mauthausen) record, it showed his occupation as: Stossmaschiner,. It means 'slotting machine operator' - on a machine for cutting things. It is likely he did this work at Auschwitz, likely making German armaments at the slave labour camp; extremely long hours, no breaks, dangerous work, bullying, violence.

Between his arrival at Mauthausen, and up to May 1945, at some point he was hospitalised at the concentration camp. ('hospitalised' meant 'a place to die' as they were left). The camp was liberated by the Allies in June 1945. Thankfully, he managed to survive.

After the Second World War / Holocaust, Baruch was re-united with his wife, Manya (Mindlegrun). They then lived in France for a while, before emigrating to Melbourne, Australia - where Manya's sister, Helen, her husband Jacob (both survived Auschwitz and Dachau concentration camps) and Jacob's brother, Emanuel Weisskirsch had emigrated. Emanuel was the first to move there, in 1948. He acted as sponsor, to enable his brother and sister-in-law to emigrate. In turn, they acted as sponsor to enable Manya (Helen's sister) and Baruch Hirsch to emigrate! They moved there in 1951.

Baruch and Manya did not have any children, as far as records determine. Manya's sister, Helen & husband, Jacob did not either. However there was a son, born to the wife of Emanuel Weisskirsch (who Anglicised his surname to White).
