Barbara J. Backs, 64, of Breckenridge Hills, Mo., and formerly of Gladwin, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999 in St. Louis, Mo. Born Aug. 31, 1934 in Gladwin, she was the daughter of Delbert and Geneva McManis Kern. Barbara married Wayland "Sonny" Backs, July 16, 1964 in St. Louis, Mo. She has lived there since. Besides her husband she is survived by one son, Charles of St. Louis, Mo.; her mother, Geneva Kern of Gladwin; three brothers, Jack Kern of Flushing, Thomas Kern of Tucson, Ariz., and Richard Kern of Houston, Texas; one sister, Linda Kern of Murray, Ky.; and one grandchild, Jacob Ream of St. Louis, Mo. Services were held Tuesday evening at the Baumann Colonial Chapel in Overland, Mo. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at McClure Cemetery.
