Mary Alice Chavez, 68, a resident of Barstow for 46 years, died Sunday August 3, 2003, at Kindred Hospital in Ontario, California. She was born September 22, 1934, in La Joya, New Mexico, and was a teacher's aide for Barstow Unified School District for 20 years.

Alice was a cheerleader and valedictorian for the 1953 graduating class of La Joya High School in New Mexico. She retired as a teacher's aide after 20 years from Barstow Unified School District. She previously worked as a file clerk at the Marine Corp Logistics Base for a short time and was an inserter for the Desert Dispatch for two or three years.

Alice was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church for 46 years. She taught C.C.D. at St. Joseph. She was a member of the St. Joseph Spanish Choir for the past 15 years, and she was an assistant to the choir director. She was also a member of the Spanish Choir in La Joya, N.M., at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Alice was very active in the band booster clubs of Kennedy and Barstow High. Her favorite hobby was attending all of the sports games that her children and grandchildren participated in. She enjoyed watching the Lakers on television. She and her husband, Eloy, always participated in the annual chili run. Alice and Eloy are both cancer survivors and participated in the annual Relay for Life cancer walk held in Barstow.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Porfinio and Rebecca Cordova; two brothers, Mariano and Chalo Cordova; sister, Beaulah Sanchez; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jesus and Albina Chavez; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Eloy and Eva Peralta; and brother-in-law, Raymond Chavez.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Eloy F. Chavez of Barstow; sons, Gerald Chavez Sr. of Barstow, Porfie Chavez and his wife, Virginia, of Barstow, Michael Chavez Sr. of Barstow, and Louie Chavez and his wife, Jacquie, of Barstow; daughters, Debbie Chavez-Martinez of Barstow, Odelia Soto and her husband, Philip, of Barstow, and Rebecca Duran and her husband, Domingo, of Barstow; brothers, Ruben, Lele, and Frank Cordova of Albuquerque, N.M., Ernesto Cordova of La Joya, N.M., and Leo Cordova of Veguita, N.M.; sister, Vina Garcia of Albuquerque, N.M.; and 20 grandchildren, Jerry, Yvette, and Isaiah Chavez, Daniel Martinez, Alyshia and Isaac Chavez, P.J., Marissa, Chelsea, Jordon, Jennaca Soto, Savannah, Mikie, and Mekiah Chavez, Loni and Lori Chavez, Amber, Kianna, Ashley, and Baby Chavez. She will be greatly missed by all her children and grandchildren.

Visitation will be Wednesday Aug. 6, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m. also at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be Thursday August 7, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be at Mountain View Memorial Park, Barstow.
