DYERSVILLE, Iowa -- John J. "Jim" Vaske, 82, of Oakcrest Manor, Dyersville, and formerly of Bankston and Dubuque, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Oakcrest Manor.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Phillip Kruse officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, with the Rev. Paul J. Otting presiding. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today, at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 3:30 p.m.

He was born March 1, 1926, in Dyersville, Iowa, son of John E. and Rose (Froning) Vaske. He was a graduate of the former St. Clement's High School, Bankston, and also was a graduate of the former Bayless Business College, Dubuque.

He married Mary Theresa Callahan on May 5, 1948, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque; she preceded him in death on June 22, 1979.

John was employed with Interstate Power Company until his retirement in 1975.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 510 of Dubuque.

John enjoyed bowling and golfing. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears.

Surviving are a son, Randy (LaVonne) Vaske, of Dubuque; a grandson, Sean (Tracy) Vaske; and three siblings, Mae (Herb) Kramer, Donald (Grace) Vaske, of Dyersville, and Carol (Patrick) Gehl, of Cascade.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and sister, LuAnn Manternach.
