DYERSVILLE, Iowa -- Donald E. "Donnie" Vaske, 78, of 1207 First St. SW, Dyersville, formerly of Bankston, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at home following a sudden illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Phillip Kruse officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 12, 1930, in Dyersville, son of John E. and Rose (Froning) Vaske. He was a graduate of the former St. Clement's High School, Bankston.

He married Grace Otting-Theisen on Nov. 7, 1964, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Donald farmed in the rural Bankston area until his retirement.

He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Parish, Dyersville, a member of the 4th Degree Dubourg Assembly Council 1573, and the Dyersville Knights of Columbus Council 1734. Donnie also was a member of the Swiss Valley Ag Board for many years, and served on the rural Farley Fire Department Board.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Vaske, of Dyersville; five children, Peg (Dennis "Pork") Ries, of Epworth, Dan Theisen, of Long Beach, Calif., Tom (Jan) Theisen, of Peosta, Mike (Deana) Vaske, of Richmond, Texas, and Chris (Cindy) Vaske, of Peru, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Erin Neiers, Jay Ries, Kelly Dahl, Brian Theisen, Nicholas Theisen, Carson Vaske, Cooper Vaske and Clara Vaske; three stepgrandchildren, Tommy Roberts, Elexis Roberts and Daphney Roberts; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mae (Herb) Kramer, of Dyersville, and Carol (Patrick) Gehl, of Cascade.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, LuAnn Manternach; and a brother, John J. "Jim" Vaske.
