Joseph Peter Messner, my maternal grandfather, was the first of six children born to John Joseph & Othillia (Missler) Messner. He grew up in Ohio, then in Jackson County, Michigan where his family later moved.

In 1917 he married my grandmother, Hazel May Hill, who was the daughter of Ephraim & Ella (Calkins) Hill. Together they had 3 children:

Esther Lena (1918-2001)
Walter John (1919-1980)
Phillip Richard (1924-1975)

During their marriage, Joseph worked as a farmer, and later as a factory worker. They lived in Blackman Township.

Their marriage ended in divorce in about 1929-1930. Esther, my mother, lived with her mother, while Walter & Phillip lived with their father and his parents.

Joseph was married a second time to a young widow, Thelma (Lee) Poole. Theirs was a lasting marriage.

My Grandfather Joe died of a heart attack on the 19th of October, 1955, just nine days before the death of my Grandmother Hazel. He was 60 years old. He was a very fun-loving man, who loved his children dearly.

My mother spoke lovingly of him, often with tears in her eyes.
