Joseph J. Cassetto of Clarkston passed away peacefully Saturday, July 14, 2007, at the age of 93.

Joseph Joel Cassetto was born Sept. 27, 1913, to Dominico Cassetto and Ida Savio Cassetto in Lewiston.

He received his primary education in Lewiston. He moved with his family to Clarkston and graduated from Charles Francis Adams High School in 1932, where he excelled in football, playing running back and quarterback. He would joke that only the lucky ones had a football helmet. Evidently he wasn't one of the lucky ones as he suffered a torn ear in a state playoff game. He loved football. He was named Honorary Captain of the Clarkston team at the 100th game between Lewiston and Clarkston. He was very proud of that recognition.

Following graduation from high school, he worked for a short time at Priest Lake, Idaho. In 1934, Joe went to work for the Camas Prairie Railroad as a car mechanic.

On April 24, 1941, Joe enlisted in the United States Army. He received his initial training at Fort Lewis and was then assigned to the Alaska Defense Command as a combat engineer. He was in charge of 136 men whose job was to construct bridges, railways, communication systems, and on shore artillery positions fighting in all the battles in the Aleutian Chain. He attained the rank of Staff Sgt., and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal and clasp, Good Conduct Medal and four Overseas Service Bars.

After he returned from the South Pacific Theater, he married Gwendolyn Knight May 13, 1944, in Pullman. They lived in Salinas, Calif., near where Joe was stationed at Ft. Ord. Following Joe's discharge from the service on May 28, 1945, he returned to work for the Camas Prairie Railroad. Joe and Gwen settled in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, where their son Kenneth Michael was born. He worked forty-two years for the Railroad retiring in 1975.

Joe was active in civic affairs serving as chairman of the city's civil service committee, chairman of the planning commission, chairman of the board of adjustment, two four year terms on the city council and one four-year term as mayor of Clarkston. He believed it was every individual's responsibility to serve the community.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where he was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He belonged to the Elks Lodge and the VFW. He helped coach Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and basketball at Holy Family School.

He was devoted to his wife, Gwen. Together they built a cabin outside of Anatone, where they and their grandchildren spent vacations and have very fond memories. As the grandchildren grew they could be seen in Pomeroy at basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball games. It was a tradition to have Sunday dinners with family in Pomeroy. Joe and Gwen enjoyed 57 years of marriage ending with her passing in December 2001.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing and being with his family. He loved life and loved people. He could be stern, but always had a twinkle in his eye especially for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He kept the bread drawer stocked with cookies and candy, especially chocolate candy for the kids. He would smile and get hugs and kisses.

He didn't know a stranger and enjoyed visiting with everyone. In his last years he insisted on going to Albertsons for his bananas and half pound of roast beef, but we suspect mostly to visit with friends.

Joe is survived by his son, Mike and his wife JoAnne; and five grandchildren, Rob and his wife Erin, Kerry and her husband Paul and their daughter Savannah, Amy and her husband Mike and their daughter Amya, Kim and her husband Joe and their daughter Piper, Jon and his wife Kim and their children Jaden and Olivia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn; parents, Dominico and Ida Cassetto; brothers, Mike and John Cassetto; and sisters, Mary Church and Pauline Standford.

Joe was able to remain in his home in spite of health problems, until the last couple of weeks due to the love, patience, and caring of family, special caregiver Mina Fox, good friend and neighbor Charlie Barth, Rescue One (who came to know him well) and Dr. Richard Weiland. Thank you to all who have prayed with and for us.
