John A. Schmidt, son of Heinrich 'Henry' and Marie 'Mary' (Schroeder) Schmidt, was born in Dolton, Turner County, Dakota Territory. The family were Mennonites and later moved to Saskatchewan, Canada where they homesteaded in several towns. John married Margaret Joan Neufeld on 06 Dec 1910 in Rostern, Saskatchewan, Canada. The couple had four sons and a daughter. They moved between Saskatchewan, Canada and Dallas, Polk County, Oregon several times, with stops to live in Caldwell, Canyon County, Idaho in between. They finally settled in Dallas, Oregon until John's death in 1971.
